Music Video of the Week: Flying Lotus – MmmHmm

Flying Lotus is an experimental multi-genre music producer and musician from Winnetka, California. He comes from a big family of musicians and is related to songwriter Marilyn Mcleod and also Alice, Ravi and John Coltrane.
The track “MmmHmm” comes from the album Cosmogramma which came out last year on Warp Records and the kaleidoscopic video which mixes live action, animation and cgi is directed by the creative studio Special Problems. It also features bass player and vocalist Thundercat. Take a trippy ride and press play on the video below.
“Flying Lotus debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006.He is most famous (yet also uncredited) for much of the bumper music on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block, and he also contributed remixes for fellow Plug Research artists including Mia Doi Todd. He is often referred to as “FlyLo” by fans and critics.
Cosmogramma is an album by Flying Lotus, released on May 3, 2010, on Warp Records. The title comes from an incident when he was listening to an Ashram lecture from his great-aunt Alice Coltrane and he misheard the words “cosmic drama” as cosmogramma.
‘Cosmogramma’ was awarded the top spot in Exclaim! Magazine’s annual ranking of Electronic albums. Dimitri Nasrallah writes of Flying Lotus, “In the five years since he first appeared on the scene, the Los Angeles native’s talents have grown in such leaps and bounds that he now finds himself pioneering a full-blown West-Coast beats renaissance.”More recently, it was ranked the 14th best album of 2010 byPitchfork Media and #1 album of the year at the Gilles Peterson World Wide Awards 2011.”
